Officials have finally tracked down a nest of Asian giant hornets in Washington state. The invasive species, which can kill a person or an entire beehive, showed up last year, and entomologists have been trying to track some back to their nest. First, they tried gluing it to one - it fell off; they also tried floss - that didn't work either. Finally, they used a combination of the two to get the tracker to stick. The nest was found on private property and vacuumed out. The fires in northern California have burned many homes, and a CNN Hero is donating RVs to help those in need. In fact, many firefighters have seen their homes burned down as they fight to rescue others, and they have received gifts as well.

The US general election is coming up in just one week, but millions of people have voted early - more than the total number of early voters in 2016, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Current polls indicate that former Vice President Biden is leading President Trump. However, this doesn't mean that he will win. For one thing, the president is chosen by the electoral college, not the actual votes, which means that a candidate can win without necessarily having a majority, which is what happened in 2016. People who participated in polls may also change their minds or not turn out to vote. Judge Amy Coney Barrett was expected to be confirmed to the Supreme Court today (Update: She is now a Supreme Court justice by a Senate vote of 52 to 48) to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the high court. Democrats wanted to delay the vote in hopes that they would gain influence in the Senate in the general election, and the Republicans wanted to move forward as soon as possible. An organization known as the Planetary Society has a $7 million solar sail orbiting in space. On earth, it is the size of a loaf of bread, but it expands into a massive sail in space. Its energy source is the Sun, so it will never run out of energy, and CEO Bill Nye (yes, the Science Guy), says that it could travel indefinitely to other planets and solar systems while also helping us learn about our own planet. NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission has landed on an asteroid 200 million miles away and collected a sample. The process is the first of its kind, and when the spacecraft returns to Earth in 2023, it could help scientists learn more about how planets formed and life began.

There is less than a week left before the election, we look at the evolution of voting rights over the years. Voting was originally limited to landowning white men over the age of 21. In 1868, it was expanded to include all men over 21 years old, and two years later, another amendment specifically protected people of all races, although Jim Crow laws like poll taxes and literacy tests were used to create discrimination. Women actually got their right to vote years later, in 1920, with the ratification of the 19th Amendment. 1964 and 65 saw the abolishment of poll taxes and literacy tests, and in 1971, the voting age was lowered to 18. This year, a much higher percentage of the younger age group has voted so far, and many college students are encouraging their peers to vote. NASA has found evidence of water on the Moon. It's not much, and they believe it is trapped in glass particles or in between particles on the Moon's surface. If it is real, this could be important for future Moon missions because transporting water into space is expensive. NASA and the USGS have generated a lunar map that will be used for future Moon missions. We reported last week that Russia, Iran, and China are all attempting to meddle in the US election. Vietnam has been hit by Typhoon Molave, the equivalent of a Category 2 hurricane on Wednesday. It was another hit to a country that has already been hit with heavy storms earlier this month. It is the fourth named storm this month to hit Vietnam, and October is its rainy season. In the US, Lousiana was hit by Hurricane Zeta, a Category 1 hurricane that tied the record for the most named storms in a season (27) and the most hurricanes to hit a single state (5). It is also the first time Louisiana has been hit by 5 named storms in a single season. Luckily, this storm moved fast, causing relatively little damage. The difference between hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones is their location. Any storm west of the dateline and north of the equator is a typhoon, anything below the equator is a cyclone, and everything else is a hurricane. The world is a patchwork of COVID-19 restrictions, with protests in some European countries after lockdowns were reintroduced. Travel right now is extremely difficult, but the Commons Project is developing an app that could allow passengers to enter their COVID-19 negative tests into the app as a sort of health passport to help ease the difficulties. In Australia, a new 500 meter tall reef has been discovered for the first time in 120 years.

Between July and September, the US economy recorded record GDP growth as lockdowns were lifted. The bad news is that it still hasn't recovered from record declines earlier in the year, and coronavirus cases are on the rise again. This could lead to more lockdowns like the ones we have seen in Europe, which could negatively impact the economy in the long run. We also don't know how the government's economic policy will shape up after next week's election. Hurricane Zeta raced across the US after making landfall in Louisiana yesterday, hitting multiple states in the process. This was good and bad; it didn't hit any area for a prolonged period of time, but on the other hand, it hit many different places. A new firefighting robot is being tested by the Los Angeles Fire Department. It can clear debris and go into places that human firefighters can't, which could potentially save lives. Nigeria has the largest population and economy in Africa. However, it has widespread and severe poverty, and many people are illiterate. Its first female mechanic, Sandra Aguebor, is trying to help change that with the Lady Mechanic Initiative, where she teaches Nigerian women to become mechanics for free.
