Over the weekend, most news sources declared former Vice President Biden winner of the presidential election and changed his title to the president-elect. In Pennsylvania, where Biden originally trailed Trump, mail-in ballots after Election Day helped turn the tide in Joe Biden's favor. As Biden's supporters around the country celebrated, supporters of President Trump protested. World leaders both congratulated President-elect Biden and thanked President Trump. This isn't the first time Biden has run for president; he ran unsuccessfully in 1988 and 2008 before serving and former President Obama's vice president. At nearly 78, he is the oldest president-elect in US history, while his Vice President Kamala Harris is the first woman and woman of color to become vice president-elect. The makeup of the next Congress is yet to be decided. First Descents, an outdoor program for those with diseases was started by a CNN Hero. Now, it has expanded to accommodate front-line workers to give them some rest and relaxation.

Pfizer announced a promising candidate for a COVID-19 vaccine. In Phase III trials, where it is tested on a large population of volunteers, it is reported to be nearly 90% effective. Meanwhile, coronavirus cases continue to rise. The US has recorded more than 100,000 cases per day, with over 10 million cases and 237,000 deaths overall. Pfizer's vaccine has not yet been proven effective and safe, and some groups, including Prizer, say more research and testing needs to be done before it is sent out. When it is, it will be free to all American citizens. Hurrican Eta, which devastated much of Central America and the Caribbean, made landfall in Florida as a weakened hurricane. It's the latest in a record-breaking hurricane season. In California, prescribed burns are being used to try to prevent future fires. Prescribed burning is when sections of forest that are not orderly or too close to homes are burned to prevent fires from spreading or causing severe property damage. A native tribe that does this has been suppressed by the state, but they hope to change perceptions around the topic to increase safety for everyone.

Subtropical storm Theta has formed in the Atlantic Ocean. Although it is expected to dissipate in the ocean, it is the 29th named storm this Atlantic Hurricane Season, officially breaking the record of 28 set in 2005. Obamacare is under scrutiny again. The Trump Administration and 20 states are asking the Supreme Court to repeal the Affordable Care Act, while another 20 states and the House of Representatives is asking the high court not to do so. President-elect Biden has announced a panel of health experts to deal with the pandemic while President Trump continues to make unfounded accusations of voter fraud and tweeted that he would eventually win the election. Highspeed rail is defined as any rail transport moving at over 120 mph. But a new concept called the hyperloop could completely redefine this at a speed more than 3 times faster. Virgin Hyperloop completed the first-ever manned test of such a system, which was originally proposed by Elon Musk. It involves creating a vacuum that allows trains to accelerate using electromagnetic propulsion. Critics say that it is expensive, low capacity, and dangerous if anything goes wrong, but it has great potential for high-speed movement of humans and cargo. Many companies and shelters are reporting increased pet adoption/purchases. However, what happens when we go back to work and leave our companions at home? Experts say that you should train your pets to be able to be alone for periods of time for when everyone returns to their offices.

Eli Lily and Company has developed a new antibody treatment as the US saw enough hospital cases to the point where hospitals were running out of beds for the sick. Many countries including the US are having difficulty trying to find an equilibrium between safety and not shutting down the economy. Many states are asking people to socially distance as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches; some are considering more lockdowns. However, some experts say that lockdowns will not be effective and that countries should focus on increasing testing/tracing instead. A Chinese submersible has landed on the seabed of the Mariana Trench, the deepest area on Earth, at a depth of 35,790 feet, just thousands of feet shy of the US-held world record. This is significant because China says many resources, specifically rare earth metals, are hidden in the deep. Rare earth metals, although not rare, are used in almost all the technology we have today, and China has one of the largest deposits on Earth. But that's only half the process. The messy and arduous task of purifying the metals is also left to China, and as more countries export their metals to China for processing, the dependency on them grows. The Shed is a new type of building that can grow and shrink as needed. It has a movable part on wheels that can expand to become a social or performing arts center. It's designers say that they envision a future in which architecture can evolve to our changing needs and environments.

Many companies are very close to creating a vaccine for COVID-19. This is remarkable because it often takes a decade or more to develop one. However, there could be challenges in terms of distribution. Many polls including one by CNN showed that nearly half of Americans would not take a low-cost vaccine should one become available. There are also logistical challenges. Many of the currently available vaccines have to be stored in sub-zero temperatures, and even though many transport firms have invested in such technology, it may be difficult to distribute these vaccines equitably. Black Friday has been changing in recent years as more deals become available online, more frequently, and throughout the holiday season. The pandemic may accelerate that change. When Amazon pushed back Prime Day, many stores pushed holiday deals forward. On top of that, it's simply not possible to have hundreds of people lining up outside stores due to the coronavirus, and it may just be the final straw for the long celebrated day.
