President Trump has nominated Amy Coney Barrett to become the next associate justice on the US Supreme Court. She currently serves on the 7th US Circuit Court of Appeals and teaches law at the University of Notre Dame. If she is confirmed by the Senate, she will replace former Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away on the 18th due to complications of pancreatic cancer. The Senate is currently controlled by the Republican party. They want to vote on and confirm Judge Barrett as soon as possible, while the Democrats want to wait until after the election, in which they hope to gain more power. See last week for more information. In Helsinki, Finland, a new way of detecting COVID-19 is being tested. Researchers have trained dogs to sniff out the virus and are now going through a trial at the Helsinki airport with volunteers. The passenger swabs their skin, puts it in a cup, and the dog checks it for the virus. If successful, this could be rolled out across the country and the world. During these challenging times, a CNN Hero is helping senior citizens. Greg Dailey delivers newspapers as a part-time job, and when one of his customers was afraid to go out into to street to get her paper, he decided to start buying groceries for senior citizens for free.

Tonight at 9PM ET, President Trump and Democratic nominee Biden will face off on the debate stage for the first time. However, due to COVID-19, there will be many changes. This debate and future ones will be held at different venues than originally scheduled, there will be fewer people, and interactions between the candidates and the moderator, Chris Wallace from Fox News, will be different. The topics for the 90-minute debate are the candidate's respective records, the Supreme Court, COVID-19, the economy, race/violence in America, and the integrity of the election. Millions of viewers watch the debates every year to get one of those memorable lines from candidates in an environment without the usual advisors, and maybe something to make up their mind. The West is seeing more dry weather - bad news because thousands of wildfires have already burned across the region. More than 44,000 fires and 7.1 million acres have burned so far. PG&E shut off thousands of power lines in California due to concerns that they would spark and create more fires. In northern Maine, Stephen Kress has helped bring back puffins to Eastern Egg Rock after they disappeared due to overhunting. He achieved the feat by transplanting young puffins from Canada.

Yesterday, President Trump and Democratic nominee Biden faced off on the debate stage. 73 million people were watching, and although only 3% planned to make a decision based on what they saw, it was still an opportunity for the candidates to show their opinions. Watch the highlights.

Russia has been stepping up its presence in the Black Sea. The strategic waterway, which leads from the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, is surrounded by Russia, 3 NATO countries, and 2 other nations. NATO was established in 1949 to protect Europe from the Soviet Union, and even though members are supposed to spend 2% of their GDP on the military, but many member nations haven't been doing that, drawing criticism from the US in recent years. Still, many military exercises have been conducted in the region to assert the strength of the alliance. In the process, many Russian fighter jets have conducted sometimes unsafe intercepts of US planes. After the debate on Tuesday, President Trump and Democratic nominee Biden hit the campaign trail again (NOTE: President Trump tested positive for COVID-19 after this report). There were noticeable differences on Tuesday. The candidates did not observe the customary tradition of handshakes with each other and moderator Chris Wallace from Fox News, and there were much fewer people watching.

There are signs that the US economy has gotten a bit better. The number of initial jobless claims last month was lower than experts expected and the association in charge of determining consumer confidence said that it had seen the highest jump since 2003, although it wasn't as high as before the pandemic. The bad news, though, is that the airline industry and theme parks like Disneyland have been struggling due to reduced customers and will lay off tens of thousands of workers. Congress is working on another stimulus bill that will hopefully allow them to retain workers. A jetstream cutting through the middle of the US is creating odd weather patterns. In the Eastern US, fall has been colder than usual, while the West is still burning. In Tel Aviv, Israel, scientists are working on a new technology that might be able to recharge electric cars while they are driving. They will implement a wireless charging technology under city streets. The system is being tested in a small area with buses and will be expanded if successful.
